Backwoods · Beta Phase · The Continuity Diagnostic™

You have the records.
You don't have the method.
That changes here.

The Continuity Diagnostic™ reads where your research actually stands — not where you hope it stands. Thirteen questions. One pathway assignment. One methodology. One worksheet built for the wall you are facing right now. Twenty-five years of lived experience distilled into twenty minutes of honest assessment.

Most researchers don't have a records problem. They have a method problem.

You have searched. You have found records. You have hit the same wall from three different directions and come back with the same result. The problem is not that the evidence doesn't exist — it is that no one has handed you the logic for reading it.

Hard ancestral research — research that crosses emancipation, that moves through pre-1870 territory, that fights name instability and jurisdictional silence — requires a different evidentiary framework than standard genealogy. Most people are using standard tools on non-standard problems.

The diagnostic identifies which problem you are actually dealing with. Then it assigns the methodology that addresses it directly.

You have records that don't connect. The same person appears under three names in five documents and no one has mapped the behavior that explains why.
You hit a wall before 1870. Civil registration didn't exist for your people in your place. The methodology that works after 1870 runs out. You need a different one.
Your ancestor appears inside someone else's record. As property, as an adjacency, as an unnamed presence in a transaction that was never designed to document them as an individual.
You have patterns but no proof. The same names, the same witnesses, the same geography — repeating in a way that feels deliberate. You know it means something. You don't yet know how to make it evidence.
You need this research to hold. For heirs, for publication, for a trust, for a court. The standard of proof is higher than a family tree. The methodology has to match.
01

You Answer 13 Questions

The questions read your research case — not your genealogy knowledge. They ask where your wall is, what the records are doing, how severe the gaps are, and what the research needs to accomplish. There are no wrong answers. There are only accurate ones.

02

The Diagnostic Routes You

Your answers score across five pathway tiers. The tier with the highest score is your assignment. The routing is not a suggestion — it is a methodological reading of what your research actually requires based on your specific situation.

03

You Leave With a Method

Your results page shows your pathway, your primary methodology, your assigned worksheet, and your recommended next steps — in sequence. You do not leave with general advice. You leave with a specific evidentiary framework for your specific research problem.

Tier I · Administrative
Administrative Pathway
Administrative Capture Point™
For researchers who need to build the evidentiary Administrative before anything else. Maps every moment the administrative system was compelled to document your ancestor — directly or by proximity — and sequences those moments into a linkage chain.
WS-01 Included
Tier II · Hawkeye
Hawkeye Pathway
Naming Behavior Analysis™
For researchers whose wall is built from name instability. Decodes every spelling variant, alias, imposed name, and administrative corruption as evidence rather than noise — and turns the naming record into a directional research tool.
WS-02 Included
Tier III · Pre-1870
Pre-1870 Pathway
Ecosystem Mapping Method™
For researchers in the zone before standardized civil registration. Maps the geographic and administrative ecosystem that actually existed for your ancestors — and builds the evidentiary chain from boundary shifts, fragmentary records, and proximity networks.
WS-03 Included
Tier IV · Patterns
Patterns Pathway
Cluster Pattern Mapping™
For researchers working in synthesis and proof construction. Reads the structural fingerprints kinship networks leave across the documentary record — surname clusters, witness repetition, geographic corridors — and turns pattern recognition into recoverable family structure.
WS-08 Included
Tier V · Reconstruction · Cypress Method™ Candidate
Reconstruction Pathway
Pre-gate to the Cypress Method™ waitlist · Application only · 2–3 clients per month
For researchers whose case requires the most intensive methodology Backwoods offers — reassembly of a line in a fragmentary documentation environment, performed one-to-one with the practitioner. The Diagnostic routes your case here when standard methodologies cannot hold it. You receive the Reconstruction Orientation — a preparatory document delivered immediately, at no additional cost — and the Cypress Method™ application.
Orientation PDF Included · Cypress™ Application
"This work is not about finding names. It is about building the evidentiary architecture that makes a name defensible — across time, across records, across the systems that were never designed to document your people as individuals."

The Researcher at the Wall

You have searched everything the standard platforms suggest. You have the census records, the vital records, the basic documentation. And you are stuck — at a point where more searching produces more of the same nothing. The diagnostic tells you why and routes you to the methodology that addresses it.

The Pre-1870 Researcher

Your research lives in the territory where civil registration did not exist, where your ancestors were documented as property or not at all, where every standard tool runs out before you need it to. This system was built for that landscape specifically — not as an afterthought.

The Researcher Building for Legacy

Your research is not for a family tree. It is for heirs, for a trust, for publication, for a court-safe genealogical record. The proof standard is higher and the methodology has to match it. The Patterns Pathway and the Evidence Chain Summary are built for exactly this destination.

The Output

Here is what you receive when you complete the diagnostic.

A named pathway. A methodology prescription. A starter worksheet delivered immediately. Not suggestions — a methodological reading of your specific case.

Your pathway is identified

Ecosystem Mapping Method™

Tier III · Pre-1870 · Backwoods

Researcher Skill Level
Case Complexity

Your case crosses the Continuity Ceiling — the point where direct documentation breaks. The record environment is not intact for your ancestor in the period you need to work. The ecosystem that surrounded your ancestor holds them even when the record system did not. That is your primary research tool from this point forward and the place where your line becomes recoverable.

What you see on completion

Your pathway tier is named. Your primary methodology is assigned. Your researcher skill level and case complexity are scored. Your pathway reading speaks directly to your research situation.

Sample pathway reading — actual result language

"

The record environment is not intact for your ancestor in the period you need to work. The ecosystem that surrounded your ancestor holds them even when the record system did not. That is your primary research tool.

Pre-1870 Pathway · Tier III

This is the actual language of a diagnostic result. Your reading will be specific to your pathway tier and your case scores. It is a prescription, not a summary.

What a pathway reading sounds like

Your reading names your research problem precisely and tells you what to do next. It is written in the methodology's voice — not in the language of general genealogy advice.

Undocumented ancestors are a records problem, not a people problem. The Diagnostic exists to show you exactly where in that records problem your case is located.

Twenty-five years of lived experience.
Twenty minutes to your method.

Nothing about this work is free. The $60 reflects what it costs to build a system that actually works for the hardest research in American genealogy — and to deliver it in a format that respects your time and your ancestors. You are not paying for access to a quiz. You are paying for the twenty-five years of methodology behind the routing.

What happens after I pay? +
You receive an access code immediately. Return to this page, enter the code, and the diagnostic unlocks. No app to install, no account to create. The diagnostic, your results, and your worksheet are all in the browser.
Can I retake the diagnostic? +
Yes. Your access code unlocks the diagnostic once — but once you are inside, you can retake it as many times as you need. If your research situation changes, or if you want to assess a different ancestor or line, retake it. The routing responds to your answers, not to a profile.
What if I am assigned the wrong pathway? +
Answer the questions honestly and the routing will be accurate. The diagnostic is not testing your knowledge — it is reading your research situation. If you answer what you think the "right" answer is rather than what is actually true about your case, the routing will reflect that. Retake it with honest answers if the first result feels off.
What are the additional worksheets and do I need them? +
Each pathway has additional worksheets beyond the one included with the diagnostic. They are shown on your results page — locked at $17 each — and purchased individually as you need them. You do not need all of them to begin. Your included worksheet is the entry point. Buy the next one when your research is ready for it.
What happens if I am routed to Reconstruction? +
The Reconstruction Pathway is the pre-gate to the Cypress Method™ — the full proprietary methodology of Backwoods, which is application-only and accepts 2 to 3 new clients per month during the beta. If you are routed to Reconstruction, you receive the Reconstruction Orientation PDF immediately — a preparatory document at no additional cost — and the Cypress Method™ application to submit. No additional charge. No obstacles. Just questions answered and obstacles removed.
Is this for Black genealogy specifically? +
The methodology was built in the context of African American genealogy research — the most difficult archival landscape in American genealogy — but it applies to anyone doing hard ancestral research. If your research crosses emancipation, pre-1870 territory, name instability, record loss, or non-European kinship systems, the methodology is built for your situation regardless of background.
What is the Clarity Session and do I need one? +
A Clarity Session is a 30- or 60-minute direct working session where you bring your specific research situation and we apply the methodology to your actual documents and gaps in real time. It is shown on your results page alongside the worksheet shop. It is not required — the diagnostic, the worksheets, and the next steps are designed to be worked independently. A Clarity Session is for researchers who want direct guidance applied to their specific case.
